Why Hummingbird exists

Ambitious, without being flaithiúlach.

The web has become remarkably capable. It has also become remarkably easy to overcomplicate. Pages grow. Tools multiply. Templates replace judgement. Organisations end up paying to maintain websites that are slower, harder to use and no clearer than the ones they replaced.

Hummingbird was created around a simple belief: digital work can be ambitious without being wasteful. We can ask better questions, make fewer assumptions and build only what earns its place. That is a sustainability decision. It is also good business.

The story at the heart of the name

Doing what we can.

In the hummingbird story, a forest is on fire. The animals stand at a distance, overwhelmed by the scale of it. One small hummingbird keeps flying to the river, carrying a single drop of water to the flames.

“I am doing what I can.”

Hummingbird does not pretend that one website will solve a global problem. The story asks something more useful of us: pay attention to the decisions within our reach and make them count.

Experience

Experience without the theatre.

That experience includes long-term client work, building digital products, managing development teams and learning, sometimes the hard way, which parts of the usual agency process create value and which simply create noise.

Hummingbird keeps the useful parts: careful discovery, strong ideas, clear design, dependable delivery and honest measurement. The rest has to earn its place too.

30+ years across digital strategy, branding, websites, apps, publishing platforms and online services

People and collaborators

The right team for the work.

Hummingbird has a small core and works with trusted specialists when a project needs them. Collaborators are selected for the actual requirement, not added to make the team photograph look busier.

Clients know who is involved, what each person is responsible for and who they should speak to.

Values

What we value in practice.

  • Clarity

Say what the website does. Make the choices understandable. Keep the route through the work visible.

  • Purpose

Build things that are genuinely useful. Something that is not useful is wasteful too.

  • Restraint

Use less where less is better. This means content, code, energy and complexity.

  • Evidence

Measure what we can, describe the conditions and avoid turning estimates into certainties.

  • Care

Clients place important projects in our hands. We look after them, and the people involved.

  • Progress

Perfect is the enemy of useful. Release, learn and improve with a grounded plan.

Process

A straightforward way of working.

A successful website does not begin with colours or technology. It begins with understanding what the organisation and its users genuinely need.

  • Listen

Your organisation, your audience, your current website and what needs to change.

  • Simplify

Structure, content and priorities. Clarity before design or code.

  • Design

An accessible, responsive experience where every element has a job.

  • Build

A dependable website with no needless weight and room to grow.

  • Measure

Performance, accessibility and estimated carbon before launch.

  • Improve

Learning from real use, then making the site work harder.

Our approach to sustainability

We consider the full life of the website: why it exists, what it contains, how it is built, where it runs, how people experience it and how it will be maintained. Digital carbon tools provide models, not meters, so we keep the language careful. The aim is not to win a badge. It is to make better decisions and be able to explain them.
